Adtran is offering two new products with wireless LAN capabilities, the NetVanta 1335 and NetVanta 150. The 1335 Multiservice Access Gateway is a platform that integrates a modular IP access router, 802.11a/b/g Wireless Access Point (WAP), 24-port Layer 2/3 Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch, firewall, VPN appliance and DSU/CSU in a single compact chassis.
The 150 lightweight WAP is useful for corporate environments that need a secure, integrated WLAN solution. It is centrally managed through a Wi-Fi Access Controller integrated into various NetVanta routers. Each controller can manage up to eight NetVanta access points. Eric Lewis, Wi-Fi product manager, says, “Eight access points can cover quite a few users since a single one can accommodate as many as 70 wireless clients.”
Adtran has taken great lengths to integrate Wi-Fi into their wired networking products for a cohesive, comprehensive solution. “With an all-in-one view, you can look at your wireless and wired environment from a single management platform,” says Lewis.
In addition, the company offers a variety of all-in-one platforms based on the Adtran Operating System (AOS) that integrate routing, managed PoE switching, WAN interface, firewall, VPN and IP telephony. The NetVanta 3100, 3400 and 1335 Series products now support wireless controller capability. Target applications are suited for SMB and branch office networks.
Lewis says, “This is one of the few products I can recall that was asked for continuously. A lot of times people see a product only to say well that’s great, but what added value does this bring my customer? The integration of wireless makes the value proposition clear."
Adtran is also well-positioned for mobile devices with its Wireless Multimedia (WMM) support that prioritizes voice over data traffic on the wireless network. The company is also conducting extensive testing to determine the upper limits of capacity when used with SME voice systems.
