Is migrating to VoIP with presence applications the be-all and end-all to getting that seamless bridge? Maybe not, if you investigate new wireless data networking service alternatives. Kentrox's release of a wireless WAN gateway is a case-in-point. Vice President of Marketing Dan Murray says this is the first product in a family of gateways to support 3G and 2G data services.
He says, "We simplified the overall design with security functions, firewalls and VPNs to support a wide range of backup applications. With prices more competitive and speed an issue, wireless can be more interesting compared to backing-up primary land-line services on a basic ISDN line or modem. The application is there when you need it, even if you don't send tons of traffic."
Features include reports on traffic type and volume, and bandwidth use. With PoE and remote enhancements, enterprises may choose to acquire and activate wireless data cards while SMBs can buy the wireless gateway and services through authorized resellers.
With the W1100 wireless gateway, enter your carrier data and you're up-and-running on any 3G or 2G data services. Kentrox sees it as a wireless backup solution for the financial and retail industries and also as a primary access application. Murray sees a strong SMB secondary market when taking a closer look at carrier pricing. "It's simple. High-speed 3G cellular data services have become a cost-effective networking option. A branch office can connect an existing router to the W1100 and use 3G data services to economically backup existing T1 lines."
The gateway supports HSDPA, EVDO, UMTS, EDGE, GSM/GPRS and CDMA 3G services with a standard PCMCIA card. It provides standard connectivity to routers and other LAN equipment, with SPI firewall network protection and VPN encryption.
