Ask a Telecom Pro

Q: Recently I identified a charge on my invoice relating to a vertical service code. What is it and why would I be charged for one?

A: Vertical service codes (VSCs) are customer-dialed codes that provide access to features and services provided by local exchange carriers (LECs) and interexchange carriers (long-distance carriers). These features are more typically referred to as star or * features. Services invoked include call forwarding, automatic callback and customer-originated trace. The format of a VSC is XX or *2XX (touchtone) and many of these have pay-per-use charges associated with them. They can be blocked through your provider and/or programming your PBX.

Q: What is a CIC?

A: It is a Carrier Identification Code and is a term that may be used synonymously with PIC (Presubscribed Interexchange Carrier) Code when speaking to your service provider. Each long-distance carrier may have many CICs assigned to it but each billing platform within a provider's billing system will tie to a specific CIC. A PIC code can be represented either by a 4-digit numeric CIC or by a 3-letter alpha code (ACNA) but it is important to always refer to your PIC code using the CIC as there may be multiple CICs associated with one specific ACNA.
