Q: What are rollover minutes?
A: Rollover minutes may be available with some wireless calling plans. Minutes that are not used accumulate and roll over into the next month; they then become available for use as additional minutes at no extra charge. The specific definition and details can vary greatly from one provider to another.
Q: I just received notice from the company that provides alarm services for my organization that they will be replacing the analog radio equipment with a digital alarm radio because of an industry-wide analog-to-digital transition. I thought that the transition was happening in 2009 and only for TV broadcasting.
A: As of midnight on February 18, 2008, cellular telephone companies were no longer required to provide analog service. Most wireless telephone users were not impacted as there are very few analog-only wireless devices left in service. The transition could have affected some alarm systems and some users of OnStar in-vehicle communications service, as those may use analog radio equipment.
This transition, known as the analog cellular sunset, is completely separate from the transition from analog-to-digital television broadcasting; Congress separately set a deadline of February 17, 2009 for completion of the transition to DTV. If you are unsure about how the sunset may affect services from OnStar, your wireless provider or from other alarm companies, check with them to find out if and how services are impacted.
