Ask a Telecom Pro

Q: I am planning to issue an RFP for network telecom services. How long does the average process take to complete?

A: The timeline is dependent on several factors. Scope of services is the first consideration. The more services involved, the more time should be allowed to evaluate technical, SLA and pricing terms. The number of custom legal considerations also contributes to time requirements. Finally, the quantity of prospective bidders contributes to the timeline, as more increase evaluation time.

Generally an RFP for services can be completed in six months, depending on the variables mentioned above and resources available to contribute to the process. Also consider increasing the timeline if switching providers is a likely outcome, as this requires more time than implementing a new contract with the incumbent provider.

Q: I’ve been tasked with eliminating wire maintenance services for my local telecom services. Our company has services with BellSouth and SBC. How do I identify wire maintenance on these invoices?

A: Wire maintenance is a service that is invoiced using different product names. AT&T (formerly SBC and BellSouth) promotes wire maintenance service as Inside Wire Maintenance, InLine Maintenance Service or Line-Backer. Depending on the type of service and region, you are likely to see any of the above three descriptions. In addition, customer service records (CSRs) may be helpful for identifying plans that have been bundled with other service features.
