Disaster Recovery and Network Redundancy
by Timothy C. Colwell, Vice President of Knowledge Operations, Evotem

Choosing the right disaster recovery solution is crucial to ensure business continuity needs and expectations are met. Professionals in IT and Telecom departments spend many sleepless nights thinking about how to keep their networks up-and-running. The best way to handle such a dilemma depends on the type of application as well as needs of the business. With some organizations a completely redundant network is required. With others a more cost-effective option such as route diversity would suffice.

Redundancy means the entire network is duplicated, from hardware and software to equipment and facilities. Even if the second network is not in use monthly charges will be incurred. Route diversity, by contrast, can occur at a business location by running lines through two separate ingress/egress points. Alternatively lines can be routed to different central offices or serving wire centers. In the long-distance arena lines can be routed to different POPs or points of presence, the long-distance equivalent of a central office. The use of multiple carriers can also provide route diversity. Although not free, route diversity can provide a lower-cost solution for disaster recovery needs.

Either redundancy or route diversity will assist in protecting your organization from outages, and putting such a plan in place will help ensure a good night's sleep.
