Task Team Model
by Timothy C. Colwell, Vice President of Knowledge Operations, Evotem

Individual tasks within telecom departments encompass administrative, operational, technical and financial activities. These tasks may be assumed by large or small groups of people depending on organizational needs and staff availability. It is vital to the operational health of the department that each task is communicated with the team to ensure all interdependencies are synchronized. The absence of synchronization can lead to repetitive work, budget overrun and overall team inefficiency.

The premise behind the Team Task model is that technical and financial experts are paired in teams based on specific services or vendors. Each team is fully responsible for all technical and financial activities for their given area. Working as a team creates natural communications interlinks that lead to operational efficiencies. Knowledge is shared as team members work on their respective tasks and less miscommunication is likely to occur. Administrative functions can be added to expand the model. It is paramount to identify each task dependency and impact to ensure everyone has the opportunity to complete tasks with optimal efficiency. In this model operational management oversees each team and group communications are funneled up to the operations staff.

One challenge is the quantity of staff members required for full implementation. Furthermore, the integration of administrative functions can be challenging if telecom departments have limited administrative staff resources.

The most successful department model addresses objectives based on enterprise needs and goals. The keys are structure and communication.
