Switched Voice Installation
by Timothy C. Colwell, Vice President of Knowledge Operations, Evotem

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if moves, adds, changes and disconnects could occur as effortlessly and as seamlessly as they often appear to

those who are unfamiliar with telecom? The key is to plan and follow best practices focused on success.

The installation of switched voice services should begin with the establishment of PICs and LPICs on all new telephone numbers. The correct 4-digit PIC should be supplied by the long-distance provider with whom the organization has a contractual relationship. This will help to ensure that the traffic is tied to the correct contractual and billing platforms.

The next step is to document all telephone numbers starting with the BTN and including all of the associated WTNs and ANIs. The TNs and installation date should be furnished to the provider. Then define the account structure for the new traffic. Both intra- and interLATA toll voice calls should be completed on each telephone number to create traffic.

After first invoices are received they should be reviewed to validate that traffic from the toll voice calls is reflected on the expected provider invoice. As a final step PIC freezes should be placed on all lines to help protect from slamming.
