M5T, a provider of software solutions for secure real-time multimedia communications over IP, has released a study, "SIP Stack Evaluation with Integrated Security," the first volume in its series of studies regarding security and the telephony industry.
It provides a set of specific technical criteria that M5T advises to use when evaluating a multiple user agent SIP stack. Each condition is as specific as possible, with the goal to minimize the interpretation of the evaluation items that each stack vendor can have. This ensures that each offering is evaluated based on the same standards set by the user.
The study also notes that even though SIP is primarily used for session management, there is a set of additional requirements that must be taken into account when evaluating a user agent SIP stack with integrated security. Additional mechanisms like SRTP, MIKEY and S/MIME must also be available to secure the whole system. It is important that these be available from the SIP stack vendor, as using different vendors for these would incur unacceptable code size overhead and possible incompatibilities.
"M5T is committed to developing solutions that meet the needs of the security conscious marketplace," explained Samuel Gunette, General Manager. "In conjunction, we are actively working to educate developers as well as end users to ensure that security is one of the focal points in their decision-making process."
