Telecom Service Profiles
by Timothy C. Colwell, Director of Knowledge Operations, TeleManage Training

Organizations have unique requirements for voice, data and wireless telecommunications. These can best be managed by establishing a framework for facilitating deployment and change, defined as configuration management. This is the practice of creating optimal service profiles to meet technical and financial objectives.

A comprehensive configuration management strategy addresses technical service needs for individuals and business units. Common categories for individuals include wireline equipment and class-of-service, wireless voice and data equipment, and remote access and VPN configurations. Monthly recurring costs for each component supports budget management and aids in predicting financial requirements. Over time trends for usage emerge, enabling comprehensive prediction of monthly and annual costs by profile.

Profiles should be classified based on employment position or grade. Creation of standard profiles for individuals streamlines MACD and inventory management. While configuration requests outside of standards may occasionally occur, these profiles create operational and financial efficiencies by establishing a norm.

Profiles for business units or individually-managed service locations should document needs as well. Common categories identify requirements for voice, data and Internet services. Similar in benefit to individual ones, these profiles assist telecom professionals in replicating services easily. Not only will technical configuration replication be supported but also financial needs for profile replication can be accurately predicted.

As organizations expand and contract, so will telecom services. Service profiles provide valuable and necessary information, assisting telecom management in implementing change and predicting its financial effects.
