Deploying and Managing Wireless Mobility Devices
by Timothy C. Colwell, Director of Knowledge Operations, TeleManage Training

Like many, I often wonder what I did before I acquired my host of wireless mobility devices. At present I am equipped with a cellphone, BlackBerry, Wi-Fi card and EV-DO card. I can reach anyone or be reached from virtually anywhere and these devices enable me to be more productive should I choose to be so.

When considering wireless devices and applications it is important for telecom professionals, business unit leaders and other decision-makers to evaluate needs and benefits provided. Employees may need wireless devices to stay in touch with customers, suppliers or colleagues, or to expand availability. Decisions can be made more quickly when employees can be reached and business conducted wirelessly.

While many valid reasons exist for employees to be untethered from deskphone and PCs, not all have the same needs. Evaluate work processes to understand who could potentially benefit. In many cases employees have occasion to need such devices infrequently. In these instances a pool of shared devices may be more economical than wholesale deployment.

Considering how wireless devices will be managed encompasses processes, staff resources, budget and policy. Many decisions about carriers, plans, budgets, monthly invoice processing, plan optimization, helpdesk support, equipment, accessories, device tracking and financial responsibility need to be made when the devices are deployed. These decisions should be reviewed annually to ensure use and cost are managed in an appropriate and optimal manner.

Wireless device usage will continue to grow. New services and applications materialize. As these events occur, institute practices to evaluate deployment and usage in your environment. Proactive management as change occurs serves the best interest of users and organizations alike.
