McKinney to Share How to Go ‘Beyond The Obvious’ When Looking for That Competitive Edge
WASHINGTON, D.C. – COMPTEL, the leading trade association for the competitive communications industry, today announced that Phil McKinney, widely known as “The Innovation Guru,” will be the keynote speaker at the COMPTEL PLUS Spring 2012 Convention & EXPO, April 15-18 in San Francisco.
Generating and executing great ideas is the key to staying ahead in a rapidly changing world. It seems so basic, but yet it is so hard to actually get right. The problem, according to McKinney, is that people have been taught to ask the wrong questions about their businesses. There has to be a better way.
Based on his newly released book, “Beyond The Obvious: Killer Questions That Spark Game-Changing Innovation,” McKinney’s keynote will share the unique and proven approach to asking the right questions—the ones all companies must ask to survive. His speech will present real-world examples that will help COMPTEL PLUS attendees change the way they operate, innovate and create.
“It’s the historical assumptions of what has worked in the past that holds organizations back,” McKinney said. “By asking the right questions, you can change the way your organization sees your products, your customers, and the way the two interact.”
McKinney recently retired as the vice president and CTO for Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) $40 billion Personal Systems Group, where he was responsible for long-range strategic planning and research and development for all of the company’s PC product lines, including mobile devices, notebooks, desktops and workstations.
McKinney has been profiled or had his work on innovation written about in media outlets ranging from tech press to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair – which dubbed him “The Innovation Guru.” McKinney currently writes a column for Forbes called “The Objective,” hosts a popular “Killer Innovations” podcast that CIO Insight has recognized as one of the “Top 10 Business Podcasts” for three years running, and tweets from his handle @philmckinney.
No stranger to the competitive telecommunications industry, McKinney was senior vice president and founding chief information officer for Teligent, a global provider of fixed-wireless services, before he joined HP. Prior to joining Teligent, McKinney held senior executive positions at
Computer Sciences Corporation, where he directed communications industry consulting engagements worldwide and oversaw the division that provided mission-critical system outsourcing for more than 165 wireless and broadband service providers.
McKinney’s keynote address will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 16, at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco. He will be signing his book, “Beyond The Obvious,” following his speech. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
