Q: What is a RespOrg?
A: Toll-free numbers are assigned to subscribers on a first-come, first-served basis by toll-free telecom service providers and responsible organizations, commonly referred to as RespOrgs. These entities, which do not have to be telephone companies, have access to a database called the SMS/800, which contains information on the status of all toll-free numbers. RespOrgs are certified by the SMS/800 database administrator. If you want to obtain a toll-free number you may contact either a RespOrg or a toll-free provider; there are several hundred entities across the US. For a list visit sms800.com or call the SMS/800 Help Desk at 888-SMS-3300.
